Silent pauses have several functions in spontaneous speech (e.g. breathing, marking syntactic boundaries as well as speech planning difficulties, time for self-repair). The aim of the study is the analysis of the interrelation between the temporal pattern and the syntactical position of silent pauses in Hungarian children’s spontaneous speech. Our hypotheses are the following: (i) silent pauses show different temporal characteristics depending on their position, (ii) different temporal patterns would be proved in children’s pauses depending on their age. 40 narratives were recorded with 6, 7, 8- and 9-year- old children. The total material was about two hours long (4 minutes per participants, on average) and was annotated using Praat 5.1. The frequency, the position and the duration of silent pauses were analyzed. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS 20.0 program. We differentiated silent pauses (S) occurring either in phrases or at phrase boundaries and pauses functioning as editing phases (E). Results showed that the position and function of silent pauses had a main effect on both their occurrences and their durations in the children’s speech similar to the adults’ speech. However, no differences could be pointed out on the durations of silent pauses between the age groups.
