Author Guidelines

Anyone may submit a manuscript to the IBVS to be considered for publication without restrictions based on nationality, qualification and affiliation. The papers are then reviewed by the editors and an external referee who will decide on the publication of the paper based solely on the scientific contents.

You can find an illustrated guideline about the submission process within OJS here: Submission guidelines.

Manuscript categories
The IBVS offers different manuscript types for publications in the journal.

Regular research papers that contain substantial original scientific results. Announcements for observing campaigns can be submitted as papers, but in that case we expect a detailed scientific description of the intended target.

Papers listing times of minima of eclipsing binaries and/or maxima of pulsating variables, and/or new ephemerides are treated as standalone research papers but use a tabulated format.

Short notes announcing the discovery of a new variable or providing new observations of an already known variable, without detailed analysis and only minimal discussion, collected in special issues.

  • Errata

Corrections can be submitted to all types of papers. Erratas are not published as separate publications but are appended to the original papers. Please consult with the editors about the corrections you wish to make.

LaTeX templates and description

Standalone (and, optionally, timing) papers are expected in LaTeX format. Templates and style files are provided in the respective descriptions. A summary of the LaTeX macros implemented in the style files can be found here: IBVS LaTeX macros.

Page limits
Since the transition to online-only publication, the IBVS no longer sets any page limits for standalone and times of minima/maxima papers. We note, however, that as a general rule, papers should be concise. If you wish to submit long papers with e.g., large tables or appendices, please consult with the editors. Reports should be kept short, with basic information and description not exceeding one page.

Language requirements
Many papers in the IBVS are written by authors who are not native English speakers. We strongly recommend authors with limited English knowledge to ask more experienced or native English colleagues to proofread their manuscripts before submission. While the editorial office can help in language editing, this only applies to papers that have been peer reviewed aleady and it will also delay the publication of the paper. Submitted papers should be understandable for peer review purposes and if necessarly the editorial office will send back poorly written manuscripts before peer review for language revision.

Registration, submission process
Authors are required to register to the journal and submit their papers through the online submission form. If you are unsure whether your manuscript fits into the scope of the journal or about the particular category (standalone paper or report) it may fall into, you can send your complete manuscript, preferably in pdf format, to the editors for initial assessment (ibvs@konkoly.hu). However, doing so will not be considered as submission: the manuscript and metada still must be provided through the online system aftewards.

Images, multimedia
Images can be submitted in the following formats: jpg, png, eps, pdf. Please make sure that the jpg/png images have sufficient resolution (wider than 640px), and quality (>85%). Labels in the images should use fonts that are large enough and easily readable, e.g. similar in size to the fonts of the text of the paper.

Data access policy
IBVS is an open-access journal, and it also maintains an open data policy. We request all authors to submit their observational data in machine-readable form (e.g. plain txt files) along with their standalone papers, whenever possible. Reports must always include the observational data they are based on.

Charges
IBVS is completely free: we do not charge authors for article processing, neither the readers for accessing the journal.
