Waterbird monitoring of the Nyirkai-Hany wetland reconstruction area
Abstract
The wetland reconstruction of Nyirkai-Hany in the Fertő-Hanság National Park was started at 2001. The flooded area stands from three lakes, where diverse vegetation was evolved. All waterbird species were monitored weekly in the area in 2002, 2006 and 2007. The diversity and the evenness of the three lakes were compared all together and separately. The number of the waterbirds was doubled from 2002 to 2007. The abundance of some species increased – mainly Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) – while most species declined. The evenness and the diversity also declined. The explanation is probably the davastation of vegetation during the study, and a parallel insrease in the area of open water. The reasons could be the high and constant water-level and the high abundance of the herbivore fishes.
