The population of the Collared Pratincole (Glareola pratincola, Linnaeus, 1766) in the Nagykunság (Hungary)
Abstract
The Collared Pratincole is a strictly protected bird species in Hungary, with most of the population is located at the Nagykunság area. The aim of our research work was the estimation of this population, and to assess habitat preference of the Collared Pratincoles on agricultural areas. The sunflower fields are the main nesting sites and dried rice fields the main resting places for the adult and juvenile birds. The monthly habitat preference indices show differences from April to September. Our results show that the Collared Pratincole adapted to changed habitats and found breeding place at agricultural areas. Conservation management has to follow this seasonality of the birds to increase breeding success.
