Abstract

The scolopendromorph centipede, Scolopendra cingulata Latreille, 1829, is the only myriapod in Hungary under legal protection. Its geographic distribution predominantly covers the eastern Mediterranean region, with countries on the Balkan Peninsula in the focus. The nominal form reaches the northernmost border of its range in central Hungary, in the Vértes Hills. In addition to the previously known two localities, we added five more extant populations during our two-year nature conservation study. Suitable biotopes of the species are the south-faced limestone slopes, even small rocky grassland patches among bushy woodland on the karst. Although the populations seem to be stable and need no strict conservation measures, there are a few factors which may threaten the survival chances of this centipede species in the future. These include the vegetation and habitat degradation caused by the overpopulation of wildboar and the introduced mouflon, as well as the activity of occasional open limestone quarries.
