Author Biography

Lajos Szlávik, Hungarian Hydrological Society

LAJOS SZLÁVIK is a certified engineer-hydrologist, civil engineer (1970), water resource management and hydrology engineer (1978). In 1982, he obtained a university doctorate, and in 1997, a PhD. European engineer (1999). 1970-1991. between 2004 and 2004, he worked at water management boards, then in senior positions at OVF, VITUKI and KvVM until 2004. For 30 years, from 1993 to 2022, he taught in Bajan as a college associate professor and college teacher. In 2013, he received the title of Professor Emeritus. Since 2017, private university teacher at the National Public Service University. Since 2014, he has been a member of the OVF Water Science Council. Since 2016, he has been an honorary member of the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers. His most important awards: Knight's Cross of the Republic of Hungary (2008), Pál Vásárhelyi Award (2010), Ferenc Reitter Award (2017), Officer's Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit (2019). He writes about 320 publications (partly with co-authors), of which 25 are books, book excerpts, and book chapters in the fields of hydrology, flood protection, water management, and water history. He received the Sándor Vitalís MHT literary prize five times. He has been a member of the MHT since 1970. In two terms, he was the vice-president of the MHT (1996-2003), then its secretary-general (2007-2011), the president of the Society from 2011 to 2023, and since then he has been the honorary president of the Society. MHT awards: Pro Aqua memorial medal (1977), Ferenc Schafarzik award (1992), Ödön Bogdánfy award (1999), Jenő Kvassay award (2023). His research areas: technical hydrology; formation and hydrology of floods in Hungarian rivers; flood protection methods and technologies; price relief, flood protection; application of lowland flood storage; causes of rising flood levels; water damage control IT methods; the history of domestic flood protection and flood protection; water resource management; water history.
