The role of passive houses in the circular economy

Keywords: passive house, heating system upgrade, questionnaire-based research

Abstract

Technology for harnessing renewable energy is advancing rapidly, and this research aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the available tools and development paths. Through our analysis, we examined the competitiveness of renewable energy solutions and passive houses, investment payback periods, the environmental impact of implementation, and Hungary’s specific strengths regarding renewable energy sources.
During the study of passive house construction, it became evident that this technology is most effectively implemented in new builds; it requires meticulous attention to detail throughout the various design phases, and the design documentation itself is a prerequisite for the certification process.
Thanks to its natural characteristics, Hungary is considered a geothermal powerhouse; consequently, upgrading the heating systems of existing properties using this technology represents a viable solution.
Our questionnaire-based survey aimed to understand how respondents view their current heating systems and associated costs, whether they plan to modernize their home heating, and which alternative energy sources they would consider adopting. Furthermore, our questionnaire-based survey examines the level of environmental awareness among the population and the importance people attach to the fundamental objectives of environmental protection; we also seek to understand how respondents envision their future and what alternatives they would be willing to adopt in their own living environments.
