Reflections on a research study: The operation of motherchild quarters and the emotional development of children in the context of the prison service
Abstract
The study examines the operation of a special segment of the Hungarian Prison Service, namely the Mother-Child Quarter of the Bács-Kiskun County Remand Prison. Through interview based qualitative research, we explored the daily practices of the quarter, with a particular focus on analyzing measures aimed at supporting mother-child relationships and the challenges associated with them. We paid particular attention to the duration of joint placement of mothers and children and developed recommendations for determining differentiated time periods regarding separating mothers and children, which promotes the safe and emotionally balanced development of children. The study can contribute to supporting the professional aspirations of the Hungarian Prison Service by promoting the harmonious coordination of child protection aspects and prison practice.
