Locked spaces, open questions: Prison service as a catalyst of religious and psychological transformation
Abstract
The Hungarian Prison Service has followed a unique development path in recent decades: from the socialist idea of “re-education” through educational optimism to a realistic approach to reintegration. Today, professional discourse is more focused on optimizing prison conditions and alternative sanctions.At the same time, ensuring religious practice carries a unique reintegration potential. Based on qualitative interviews, the study examines how the locked space of a prison can become a spiritual space that promotes the reorganization of identity. Special attention is paid to family socialization, the experience of conversion, and the psychological role of religion.
