Gamification tools and their possible applications in urban planning processes

Keywords: gamification, participation, urban planning, methodology

Abstract

One of the major social problems of our time considering city planning is the increasing difficulty of incentives. This phenomenon is growing not only in education, but also in community planning processes. Gamification, a new phenomenon and methodology aimed at motivation, can offer a solution to this problem. Only in the last few years has there been a significant increase in scientific research in this field, mainly at international level and in the field of education, but there is also a growing body of good practices in gamification of participatory urban development. However, it is not yet widespread in Hungarian practice, nor can we necessarily speak of conscious gamification in the case of gamified events. Based on the previous researches a content analysis of relevant games was conducted. As a result, I have compiled a gamification toolkit organised into three main categories: player elements, software elements and tangible tools. By adopting these in a suitable and coordinated way, it is possible to gamify urban development, enhance the role and effectiveness of community planning, in order to increase citizen motivation and participation.
