Géza Balázs: The Birth of Art and Language

  • Károly Hauber
Keywords: language origin, linguastics and art, cultural history, language use

Abstract

True to the title, the author explores the origins of art and language, while conducting an extremely extensive investigation, which includes, in addition to linguistics and the arts, ethnography, psychology and the whole of cultural history. It is not for nothing that the book discusses art and language together. He regards the latter not simply as an artificial system of signs, but as a metaphysical formation in which the whole person is as much involved as in art. Moreover, it is an art in itself: both a mimesis and a creative form of activity that brings pleasure. Unspoken, it seeks answers to the big questions: Who are we? Where did we come from? Where will we go?
