György Kurtág and a Role-Playing Game in the Style of Attila József

  • Szabolcs Molnár

Abstract

In Attila József's early sonnet Silence (1922), there is an emergence of poetic images and existential questions that foreshadow the poet's subsequent works and may also be familiar from several compositions by György Kurtág. The presence of death, which can be seen to dominate every moment, as well as the concepts of cowardice and uncertainty, which are fundamental experiences of existence, and the notions of self-destruction, frequently appear in Kurtág's compositions. The notion of a spiritual kinship between the poet and the composer is particularly salient in the József Attila – Fragments (1982), composed for soprano. Beyond the question of whether the cycle can be interpreted as a role- playing exercise, this study also attempts to outline the cultural- historical context of the composition as well as the reception history of Attila József's oeuvre, with particular attention to the period of Kurtág’s youthful awakening and the reception of the poet in Southern Transylvania during the 1930s and 1940s.
