Abstract

Comments on names included in the "Onomasticon of Personal Names of the Age of the Arpads (1000–1301)"

The 9,500 entries of the "Onomasticon of Personal Names of the Age of the Arpads (1000–1301)" contain 39,000 personal names collected from sources dating back to the period between 1000 and 1301 and available now in print. A minority of the personal names originate in Hungarian common nouns, whilst the overwhelming majority of foreign personal names are of Ecclesiastic Latin, Slavic and German origin. A few name forms are of unknown or obscure origin. With respect to numerous foreign names it is impossible to decide with certainty whether they have been formed by Hungarian or foreign (Slavic) derivative affixes.
