Hussar Trick? András Hadik’s October 1757 Campaign

Abstract

In my paper, I present a special segment of the art of warfare of the 18th century, small-war warfare. In particular, I examine the raids and unexpected actions of Hussars who played a prominent role in such campaigns. These acts of war are called Hussar tricks. This short study seeks to answer the question of whether András Hadik’s operation against Berlin (1757) can be considered a Hussar trick. Hadik’s successful operation will be compared with other events that can be considered Hussar tricks in an attempt to define this elusive concept.
