Dilemmas Over the Official Status of Asturian Language

Keywords: Asturias, Spain, minority rights, language rights, official language

Abstract

The Asturian language does not have official status in Asturias, although the Statute acknowledges its regional significance. The issue of official status is a subject of lively social and political debate. Supporters view recognition as crucial for the language's survival, while opponents highlight economic burdens and compulsory measures. The debate is situated at the intersection of political interests and linguistic rights.

This study explores the potential impacts of official status, institutional and legal obstacles, and the main arguments in the discourse.
