Word meaning definitions produced by children aged between 5 and 9

The aim of this study is to analyse the development of constructing meaning across ages. What progress can be observed between the ages of 5 and 9 in word-meaning definitions? For analysis, recordings from GABI database were used. In this speech database, one of the tasks is to define 20 words and phrases verbally. Recordings of 30 5-7-9-year-old children were analysed.  There were 10 children in each age group. Results show that age and part of speech of the words influence children’s definitions. 5-year-old children gave more incorrect and incomplete definitions than those of the older groups. There were specific categories of word definitions which were typical for all parts of speech while others could be found only for certain parts of speech. For example, children defined household objects (nouns) providing their
functions as definitions. These results contribute to better understanding of meaning construction across ages in childhood.
