Patient motivation and decision-making aspects by choosing a private hospital for joint replacement surgery in Hungary

Keywords: total knee replacement, total hip replacement, decision making, private hospital

Abstract

Introduction Our study aims to identify the patient's clinical outcome expectations in total joint replacement. On the other hand, our research aspires to validate a linguistically adapted international expectation questionnaire for Hungary. In this study, the first experiences explore essential aspects regarding the patient motivation and consideration mix in the case of out-of-pocket financed surgeries.

Methods In the zero phase of the research, the questionnaire was pilot-tested among hip and knee replacement surgery patients. The respondents were recruited online on social media (n=393). 23.15% of the study patients chose a private hospital for joint replacement surgery (n=91).

Results Our study presents the motivation and background of these 91 patients. The most influencing factor in the patient's decision is the orthopaedic surgeon; 87% choose the surgeon first.

Conclusion Besides the role of the orthopaedic surgeon, the available information is essential. In order to achieve an informed patient decision, it is necessary to share the patient's health literacy-relevant, comprehensive information and transparency regarding the health provider's quality indicator figures.
