The End of the Káldy Era Illness

Legitimacy, and Ecclesiastical-Political Transition in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hungary, 1985–1987

Abstract

This study examines the ecclesiastical-political implications of Bishop-President Zoltán Káldy’s illness, death, and the subsequent episcopal succession in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hungary between 1985 and 1987. The analysis is based primarily on two sources of markedly different character: the 1987 diary of László Benczúr Sr. and the later memoir of Zoltán Káldy’s wife. By comparing these narratives, the study demonstrates that Káldy’s prolonged incapacity was not merely a personal or medical crisis, but also exposed the structural fragility of late socialist Lutheran church governance in Hungary. In a highly centralized system built around the authority of the bishop, formal ecclesiastical bodies, informal familial influence, and the State Office for Church Affairs became closely intertwined. The study argues that the beginning of the Harmati era should be interpreted neither as a clear rupture nor as simple continuity, but rather as a forced transition in which the persistence of Káldy’s ecclesiastical-political arrangements coexisted with the emerging demand for the moral and institutional rehabilitation associated with the legacy of Lajos Ordass.
