“Earthly Angels and Heavenly Men”
Reflections on Spirituality, Priestly Identity and Monastic Life
Abstract
Practical theological reflections in recent years have increasingly focused on the ministry of pastors, the diverse workload of ministers, the causes and problems of burnout, and the possible paradigms for this profession. It is striking that academic thinking basically captures and defines the profession in terms of its function. The public thinking and practice of the church fully follows this pattern: the pastor is what he or she does. This study attempts to think about pastoral vocation not in the dimension of ecclesial functions, but in the dimension of spirituality. The framework for interpretation is provided by the self-definitions and statements of the desert fathers, who are regarded as pioneers of a life with God in Christian spiritual history.
