The Location of World Literature

The paper makes a case for widening the scope of what Tihanov sees as the dominant liberal-cosmopolitan understanding of world literature in its contemporary Anglo-Saxon discourses. The argument questions the usability of globalist and transnationalist approaches and suggests that the temporal and spatial “locations” of world literature are structured differently than suggested by the image of unrestricted “circulation”. It also argues for a more nuanced approach to the problem of accessibility in translation as well as calls attention to the self-reflexive understanding of world literature in literary texts themselves.
