Toponyms in village Som (Ukraine)
Abstract
Toponyms in village Som
The author examines historical and present-day toponyms from the village Som, a Hungarian settlement in district Beregszász (Ukraine), near the Hungarian border. 40% of the collected ca. 500 names are field-names, as the settlement has made a living from agriculture for centuries. Names of buildings (27%) and names of built-up areas (13%) are also numerous reflecting the eventful history of the village. Place-names most often display a single name-function indicating either the type or a characteristic feature of the place, but a combination of the two above functionsis also common.
