Practices of giving Christian names in the Catholic population of a bilingual settlement in the 20th century

The study features the 20th century changes in naming practices in Németbarnag, a Transdanubian settlement of German majority. The situation of the German inhabitants in the settlement altered radically in the years after the Second World War, which was followed by changes in their naming practices. On the basis of the entries in the Catholic baptismal register the author examines 20th century naming practices in two periods: between 1900 and 1943; and between 1950 and 2000. In the two halves of the century one can observe important differences in terms of both the name stock and the motivation of naming practices. The author concludes that during the 20th century German inhabitants of the settlement turned gradually from fixed, Germanic traditions of name giving to practices free from community restrictions by borrowing Christian names popular among the neighbouring Hungarians into their name stock essentially invariable for two centuries.
