Abstract

Shale as a rock name causes many problems. The Hungarian translations of shale, clay shale, clay marble, marl or aleurolite do not reflect the US shale in all respects, but there is no word, term or phrase in the Hungarian language that is a clear translation of the English word „shale”. Even the English language may not be satisfied with the meaning of the term shale. The difficulty of shale exploration and shale gas/shale oil production in Hungary is caused by the heterogeneity in extent and organic matter content, which makes it difficult to delineate the area where commercial production can be achieved (as G. Mitchell did in the Barnett Shale Formation, Texas, USA). Shale as a rock is difficult to define, but can only be fully described as a rock assemblage (formation), which can contain almost any sedimentary rock (see below, the origin of shale). It was therefore necessary to define the term shale more precisely, mainly by examining examples from the USA, where a rich body of research material has been presented in the literature since 2000. This need is addressed in this paper in order to find analogies to US formations in domestic formations where similar CH production could possibly be achieved.
