The last years of conscripts at the Hungarian Border Guard

Abstract

In April 1998, the last conscript was demobilised from the Border Guard. The paper analysesthe changes in the situation of the border guard conscript staff in the preceding years, anddescribes the changes in their employment, their disciplinary situation and that of doingalternative (civilian) service, the new problems of recruitment and service provision andtypical incidents. The study also discusses the difficulties encountered by the Border Guardrelated to conscripts’ service provision.
