The effect of block-section-level resolution on the accuracy of railway network models

Abstract

In the present paper, a block-section-level graph model of the railway network of Hungary is presented and the system is characterized by using this model. By applying a uniform traffic, the betweenness centrality of each line section, i.e. its traffic load is calculated. By modeling the disruption of each line section with total closure, the average increase in the route lengths and the the effect on the total route length of the system, which can be as high as 25 %, can be calculated. Due to the block-section-level resolution, not only the behaviour of single line sections and stations can be described in normal and disrupted circumstances but also the effect of lines with different parameters on each other.
