The Committee on Military Science Was Re-established 30 Years ago

Abstract

Since its foundation in 1825, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has been the prominent organisation of Hungarian science. Already at the time of its foundation, it was suggested that military sciences should be included in the Academy’s scientific activities, but for a long time this discipline was not allowed to be present in the Academy in terms of an organisation. After the Great Compromise, however, some parts of the discipline, some areas of military science, did gain ground. After the Second World War, the discipline was again in a bad way. Only in 1994, after the regime change, did military science regain its place with its own organisation at the highest level of scientific life. Since its re-establishment 30 years ago, the Committee on Military Science of the Academy’s Section IX has been actively involved in the cultivation of science and in creating synergies between the various disciplines in the field of military science. This paper aims to give a very brief account of the three decades since the re-establishment of the Military Science Committee in 1994.
