Turns in Military History, the New Military History and the Normative Turn

Abstract
In the latter half of the 20th century, there was a resurgence in the field of military history research, driven by a number of significant turns. The predominant characteristic of this process, which is designated as new military history, is its examination of the social aspects of war. This novel research trajectory is also designated as "war and society" military history. This is in contrast to the military history research of the previous century and a half, which primarily focused on military operations. The following study draws attention to the fact that turning points in military history are not only characteristic of the second half of the 20th century, but can be found as far back as ancient times; and that the turns in new military history have not yet been exhausted, but a new research direction that can be called „normative turn” can also be identified. Beyond their intrinsic value, these two phenomena can also be used by the author of the study to take a position and, as he intends, to settle the debate between researchers representing military operation-focused and society-focused military history.
