Challenges for Defence Policy and Planning – an International Perspective
Abstract
The presentation, as a starting point, provides us with a quick overview of the new challenges that fundamentally changed the European security landscape. The presenter then describes the main lines of NATO’s ensuing adaptation process, pointing to the shifting balance of the Alliance’s three core tasks, and the restructuring of the associated military capability requirements. He also offers us a review on the current dynamics of the transatlantic relationship, including the need for a fairer sharing of the burdens and responsibilities between the two sides of the Atlantic. In addition, he provides us with a short assessment on the recent initiatives regarding the reinforcement of the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union, while also analysing the related specific national interests of Hungary. In conclusion, he takes stock of the different considerations that may influence the development of the capabilities of the Hungarian Defence Forces within the framework of these two multilateral organisations with a view of the increasing defence budget.
