Prevention of cardiovascular diseases, screening and intervention in the ranks
Abstract
Regarding chronic, non-epidemic diseases that are in the focus since the change of the epidemiologic era, efficient prevention is based on a complex view of the disease that is centred on the exhaustive and interdisciplinary calculation and reduction of actual risk status. Research on the health status and health behaviour of the ranks of HDF, and the usage statistics of the healthcare system (as per ICD) show equivocally that the most common diseases among the ranks are those of the circulatory system. The underlying disease process of cardiovascular diseases is very complex (genetic factors, environmental factors, unhealthy lifestyle), yet the development of such diseases can be predicted with great accuracy using an efficient risk estimation strategy. During 2010 as
part of the workplace health development and community prevention programme we undertook cardiovascular risk estimation for those soldiers who volunteered for this during the cardiovascular block (sample of convenience). The risk estimation methods applied make it possible for the participants to receive the results of their risk estimations on the spot, together with individualised lifestyle advice and leaflets relating to healthy lifestyle appropriate to their risk factors.
