Abstract

The goal of this article is to highlight just this – the importance of the communication side of the conflict to the insurgents, by comparing two current conflicts, Sri Lanka and Iraq. The Tamil insurgency in Sri Lanka has a long history, but internationally it sometimes tends to be forgotten. The opposite conflict is n Iraq. The common thing in these two conflicts is that both have contributed to the theory and practice of insurgencies, in the communications field. The Tamil Tigers were the first to perfect their communications skills. The Iraqi insurgents took the Internet, and used it for recruiting, training, communication, fundraising and propaganda just to name a few vital functions. The article intends to show how these skills worked for the insurgent side as a kind of force multiplier, which is almost impossible to beat.
