First names given in large families in Budapest
This paper compares the naming practices of families containing many children with those of the rest of society. This study is based on first names given between 1996 and 2002. A striking feature in the naming practices of the previous group is the predominance of martyrological names. Another characteristic is the resistance against the spread of foreign-like and hypocoristic names. Both peculiarities may be led back to religion and traditional family values.
