Medical students’ perspectives on online education and exams during COVID-19 at UPMS
Abstract
COVID-19 has changed our everyday life in many ways ranging from the need to wear masks to the introduction of social distancing and lockdowns in an attempt to minimize physical contact between people and thus limit the spread of the virus. In higher education, universities took similar steps to ensure the safety of students and staff. In April 2020, the University of Pécs Medical School (UPMS) closed its gates and switched to online education, bringing tremendous changes into the lives of students and teachers. Mixed-method research was carried out during the spring semester of 2020. With the help of interviews and an online questionnaire medical students’ thoughts and impressions about online education and exams were collected, assessed and evaluated. A total of 15 international and Hungarian students were interviewed, and 105 students completed a questionnaire, thereby both qualitative and quantitative data were obtained for the study. The results showed that while overall satisfied with online education, most students missed personal contact and would have preferred hybrid, i.e. a mixture of online and face-to-face, education.
