Effect of water absorption on the compression strength after heat load

Keywords: water uptake, admixture, heat load, concrete age

Abstract

In case of concretes with conventional quartz gravel, the moisture content of the concrete influences the development of the strength of the concrete, especially in lower temperature ranges, up to about 300 ° C. Lightweight aggregate, in contrast to quartz gravel aggregate, absorb moisture (water) during mixing. In case of lightweight concretes, an important question is how the residual compressive strength of the concrete changes in different temperature ranges and to what extent this is influenced by the water absorption capacity of the aggregate. In our experiments, we investigated the change in strength (at 16, 30 and 90 days of age) of concrete made of quartz gravel and two expanded clay aggregate with different water absorption capacities under thermal stress (20 ° C, 50 ° C, 105 ° C, 150 ° C and 300 ° C).
