Lignite deposits in Székelyland

Abstract

In the Székelyland region industrial-scale lignite mining began in the late 18th century. Its top period
lasted from 1958 till 1989. The change of political regime brought about drastic decline. After a concise
historical review, those two lignite deposits are described which are being exploited even at present
(Barót-Köpec and Borszék). Furthermore, also those lignite deposits are characterized which are not
being mined (Valea Crisului, Calnic, Sfäntu Gheorghe, Ilieni Säncraiu, Iarä§, Aita Medie, and smaller
deposits in the Erdővidék [Woodland] area.) The overall calculated geological reserves amount to 250
million metric tons.
