Abstract
Toponyms of the fort system in Komarno
The study deals with the toponyms of the fort system in Komarno from onomastic point of view. These names of human establishments are grouped according to the motivation of naming. The names of the Old Fortress and those of the New Fortress refer to age and time. In the investigated corpus the most frequent names are the ones that refer to a person: Ferdinand Gate, Leopold Gate, Madonna Bastion, Saint Christopher Bastion, The Palatine Line, etc. Names of toponymic origin refer to hydronyms (The Vag Line, The Danube Bridgehead) and to place-names (Fort Igmand). Some bastions of The Palatine Line are identified with numbers: Bastions I–XI. The name The Danube Bridgehead refers to the shape of the fort system. The toponyms of the fort system proved to be important location points in the course of history.
