Onomastics in the 10th International Congress on Finno-Ugric Studies

In the international congresses on Finno-Ugric studies onomastic lectures have traditionally been inserted into the programme. The conference held in 2005 in Joskar-Ola stood out not only because onomastics played a more important role in the congress than ever before, but also because the problems of onomastics were discussed in a separate section. In a round table discussion researchers debated the situation of Onomastica Uralica, a periodical started in the previous congress. Results achieved in the published volumes were reported, and apart from the positive effects of the series in general shortcomings of the work performed so far were also treated. Representatives of Uralian onomastics urged to continue the initiative: guidelines on further cooperation were clarified, topics of the following volumes were fixed, and changes were initiated with regard to some questions of publication strategy. The account also deals with the most important lectures of the onomastic section calling attention to their rich contents, to their new methodological features and to their possible deficiencies. These lectures given by Russian linguists focused on the onomastic problems of minor Uralian languages, which in itself shows that this field of research is prospering with respect to all languages of the Uralian family.
