The introduction of a new, anatomy-based Latin book
Abstract
The Department of Medical Communication and Translation Studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Szeged, teaches Latin medical terminology to medical students as well as to pharmacy and dentistry students. The course aims to provide students with the necessary background in Latin for studying health sciences and to familiarise them with the basic medical terminology related to the Latin and Greek languages. At the end of each semester, students fill in an online anonymous questionnaire in which they can give their opinion on the course structure, the teaching and whether they would like to change anything. The students have claimed that the Latin terminology course should follow the curriculum of the anatomy lectures and the dissection practice. For this reason, the main objective of the Latin instructors at the department is to renew the curriculum in all three forms of training. As a first step, a new coursebook for dental students in the Hungarian programme was prepared and used for the first time in the first semester of the academic year 2023/24. The paper first introduces the teaching of medical Latin at the Faculty, then describes the structure of the book and reviews the subsections of the chapters. The second half of the paper summarises the teaching experiences and student feedback related to the course.
