On botanical binomials and their changes in the Hungarian language
Abstract
Many unresolved questions arise regarding the Hungarian nomenclature of plant species, such as the choice of binomial names analogous to the Latin system. In this context, it is also important to consider whether the name of a species should be modified in Hungarian when it is reassigned to a different genus. The Hungarian binomial names are useful and valid in many cases, but they should by no means be forced. „Binomialization” is an unnecessary complication in the case of monotypic genera, while single-word Hungarian names are inherently more resistant to rearrangements in a genus-level classification. The basic types of taxonomic changes include the merging and splitting of genera, reassignment of species to a different genus, and its reversal. In general, it does not seem justified for Hungarian names to follow these modifications. Linguistic stability and maintaining traditions are the most important arguments in favour of retaining existing names. Blindly following changes in the scientific nomenclature would only further increase the confusion, which is already difficult to manage. The article illustrates the subject matter with numerous examples. I suggest that it is time to develop a Hungarian code of plant nomenclature by synthesizing the many well-intentioned proposals.
