Abstract

Introduction: According to WHO data, in 2009 chronic diseases are the leading causes of mortality in Europe, responsible for 80% of all-cause mortality. Health status of the Hungarian population is unfavourable. According to the „Health Report 2016” of The National Institute for Health Development the chronic diseases are the most challenging problems in Hungary, too. The aim of our research was to assess the prevalence of chronic diseases among adult population of Nyíregyháza.
Methods: In our cross-sectional survey thequestions regarding the prevalence of chronic diseases were obtained from the European Health Interview Survey 2014 (Hungarian version). Data recording and analysis were performed using SPSS software (version 22.0).
Results: Among 386 participants, 33.7%of respondents declared presence of at least one chronic disease. The most common disease was the hypertension (29.3%), however the prevalence of musculosceletal diseases was also high. Within the population, 23.3% of respondents reported about low backpain and chronic spine problems, while 17.3% reported about arthrosis. The prevalence of chronic diseases has increased with age. Examining the gender differences, the prevalence of hypertension was higher in men under 65 years, and in women over 65 years. The prevalence of migraine and allergy were higher in all three age groups among women compared to men.
Conclusions: The most common chronic diseases were hypertension and musculosceletal diseases among the adult population of Nyíregyháza. These diseases can be associated with unhealthy diet. In order to decrease chronic diseases, prevention programmes focusing lifestyle and screening are needed for the population of Nyíregyháza.
