GPS navigation on historical and modern geological maps
Abstract
The usage of georeferenced maps in GIS applications provides the possibility to apply geological maps in real-time
GPS-navigation. In these tasks, both historical and modern geological maps can be applied. A georeferenced raster file
of a geological map can be rendered as a background image in GPS software on a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). The
software shows the actual position provided by the GPS-navigation on this background. Thus, the information on a
geological map can be interpreted directly in the field at exactly the position of the observer. Using this procedure with
modern maps, it provides an interesting new form of application for users. The usage of historical maps is also a possible
application for the mapping geologists, too. This study, gives an algorithm of such an application and tackle the problem
of the characteristic errors associated with it.
