25 years of the Hungarian Geological Society, 1999–2023
Abstract
The Hungarian Geological Society celebrates its 175th anniversary with a series of jubilee events. Among the commemorations is taken place the present historical review of the Society’s past 25 years. The Society has 25 years behind it, rich in events and programs, successfully fulfilling its basic tasks, and has remained faithful to its traditions even with a decreasing number of members. Due to the changes in its scientific activity and the modernization of its operations, this period can also be considered renewal, or a renaissance of the Society. It has maintained the high scientific standard of its events and has incorporated a number of creative programs for professionals and interested non-professionals into its activities. Instead of a chronological overview, we prepared a thematic compilation, starting with the description of the Society’s, operation based on traditions. This is followed by the presentation of the expanded modernized, newly created system of relationships which ensures the social and economic background of the Society. In addition to preserving the scientific standard, fundamental changes have taken place in the past 25 years in the way of conducting highlighted, centrally organized, or regional branches and thematic scientific sections’ events. In parallel with the development of science, came to the fore the specialized meetings, sometimes lasting several days, bringing together experts from a particular field of science. There were introduced several successful informative events addressing a wide audience. It was possible to find types of events that aroused the interest of young people.
